Beets are one of the popular vegetables that are known for their nutritional value, which include minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. Some of the gardeners grow bigger beets while others can, which can be frustrating, but let me tell you, it’s not impossible and you could do it too.

At the beginning of my gardening journey, I faced the same failure, but I finally found a way to grow bigger beets than others. Beets are usually grown at the end of summer or early spring to harvest in fall. The beets need proper and well-maintained and drained soil with neutral pH. Like other normal vegetables, it consists of normal plant growth stages, from germination to maturity.

Selecting the Right Variety:

The first and most important step in this process is selecting a variety of seeds that give you larger beets. There are different types of beets variety to choose from, like Chioggia, cylindra, Detroit dark etc are mostly known for their ability to grow big.

After selecting the variety, make sure to get seeds in proper shape. Well, it seems not necessary, but trust me I have been through this; getting the proper quality of seeds is very important for easy growth.

Preparing the Soil:

To prepare the soil, you need to test your garden soil to determine its pH. If it’s 6.0 to 7, then it’s good, but if more than, then add ad a little bit of sulfur to lower it. But if it’s lower, add little bit of lime to it to increase the pH value.

After that, add fertilizer to the soil. You can add any fertilizer, but I ld recommend organic well-rotten manure or compost to increase ts fertility. You should also loosen the compacted soil properly before planting your seeds, which improves and provides proper root growth and drainage system. Smooth and proper tirm soil prevents waterlogging,, eventually giving you bigger beets.

  • Nitrogen: It’s important for plant development, but exceeding it can be dangerous.
  • Phosphorous is essential for root development, so it is perfect for big beets.
  • Potassium: prevents the plant from dangerous diseases.
  • Micronutrients: Other micronutrients are also important for the proper and growing of beets.

Time of Planting:

The time of planting beets is depending upon your area environment, which means if you live in a cold environment, you focus on planting at the end of summer, but if you live in a warmer climate, then you should plant in starting of winter to protect it from the summer heat.

Planting beets with proper methods is very important in these procedures, which you follow accordingly.

  • First, you should make rows that are 15 to 20 inches apart.
  • Next, you should plant your seed 2 to 3 inches deep in the prepared soil.
  • You should plant your seeds 4 to 5 inches apart from one another
  • You should also plant a companion plant along with your beets to keep the pest away. The companion plants should be garlic, onion, etc.

Watering:

Just like every other plant, beets need proper watering. You have to water the beets with about 1 inch of water per week. You can adjust it according to the surrounding temperature and also in the rainfall. Avoid overwatering and underwatering because both of them can affect the plant, which indirectly affects beets and the size of the beet.
