How to Grow Cabbage in a Container or Pots:

Container farming is one of the easiest ways of planting your Favorite vegetable if you have limited space or don’t even have space, and want to control the whole growing process. Growing cabbage plants in pots or a container is a simple process, and you can even do it from your balcony. In container cabbage farming, you can control the whole process, from light exposure to soil types and watering.

Below, I listed a process or method of how to grow cabbage from seed in container, which is based on my methods of growing cabbage indoors in a container. So, without wasting any time, let’s get to it.

Choosing the Right Variety:

First on the list is choosing a variety that you want to grow. If you haven’t already decided, then there are different cabbage varieties to choose from, like savoy types, mini red cabbage, etc, which are considered best for pot and container gardening.

Tips:

During the selection process, you should consider temperature when you choose a variety for growing in a container. You should get a variety that requires the same quantity of temperature.

Container Selection:

After selecting a Variety, it is time to choose a container. The container size for cabbage is usually depended according to your cabbage variety size, but normally, you will need a container with a size of 12 inches to 20 inches, which allows you to grow cabbage to full size. There are different types and materials to choose from, but one thing is important: make sure that your container has holes for drainage to prevent waterlogging.

Soil Management:

For soil, make sure to get a good drain or potting soil and mix it with aged manure or compost soil to provide a boost to your cabbage plant. In the soil, make sure to add some sand because it improves drainage.

Also, check the pH of the soil and adjust it to 6.0 to 7.0 because cabbage is slightly acidic soil.

Planting Time:

The next thing to do is to choose the planting time. For cabbage, you need a cool season, or you can also plant it in early fall. The best way to be successful is to choose to plant them and keep the containers inside to germinate and also protect them from frost.

You can plant the seeds directly into the container, but I would recommend you plant and grow cabbage in pots, and when they grow into seedlings then, you can transfer them into containers, no matter if you are growing cabbage in containers indoors or outdoors.

Watering and Fertilizer:

For watering cabbage in a container, you need to water them 1 to 2 inches per week depended on climate and temperature. But do not exceed that limit because there is a chance of waterlogging. The limit for watering your cabbage plant depends upon climate, temperature, and type of variety.

Other than that, you need to add balanced fertilizer every 3 to 5 weeks. For fertilizer, you can choose any one, but make sure to get it according to its needs.

Sunlight Requirements:

Cabbage needs about 6 to 8 hours of sunlight a day, but it doesn’t like direct sunlight, especially at noon. So, what you need to do is to keep your container outside in a place where it gets sunlight in the morning and the evening; by doing that, it will get its required sunlight and protect itself from exposure to extreme sunlight.

Pest and Diseases:

Some of the common in cabbage include aphids, slugs, cabbage worms, etc. The best way is to introduce beneficial insects like butterflies, which will help you eliminate the population of aphids and other pests. Other than that, you can also use any good pesticide.

For diseases, it has many soil-borne diseases like clubroot, etc. The first and best method is to rotate the crop and treat your soil for these soil-borne diseases. You can also use any good spray to treat these diseases.

Harvesting Cabbage:

After 6 months, it is time to harvest your container-grown cabbage. So first of all, you need to check the cabbage and make sure that it is ready or not. You can make sure by checking its size; when they are about their required size (depended upon their varieties) usually about 10 to 12 inches in diameter, then they are ready. You can also tell by its look and shape.

So take a knife and start cutting its head, and keep it in a basket. If you have a big field, then some of the cabbage will not be ready, so you need to wait a week or so and come back.

You can store cabbage for up to 2 weeks in a cool and dry place or a refrigerator.
